Partner Release: DALSA selects Aspex Semiconductor to power next-generation Origin® 4K workflow

Las Vegas, NV – 16th April 2007 – Aspex Semiconductor™, a UK -based fabless semiconductor company developing leading-edge software programmable Extreme Processors, today announced that DALSA has selected Aspex's Linedancer™ processors to power its "4K Lab-in-a-box" image processing workstation, designed to efficiently and cost effectively de-Bayer RAW 4K motion picture images.

DALSA will be demonstrating a prototype of the workstation at NAB, based on Aspex's Accelera™ 3000 family of PCI cards, which integrate four Linedancer chips onto a simple PC plug-in card. Harnessing the power of 16,384 processor cores, the solution is able to de-Bayer RAW 4K image files at up to five frames per second, which is 10 to 40 times faster than CPU based software solutions.

"At a technical level, we chose the Aspex platform because of its unique combination of software programmability, scalable performance, and fast time-to-market", said John Coghill, Vice President and General Manager of DALSA Digital Cinema. "But the real magic is what it delivers to our customers – the ability to work with our 16-bit, 4K images, efficiently and cost effectively. It's like having an entire render farm in a single workstation."

Aspex's Linedancer processors accelerate key processor-intensive tasks required to convert ultra-high quality, 16-bit RAW Bayer image data captured by the DALSA Origin camera into standard RGB 4K film formats, as well as providing high quality, downscaled "Super 2K" images.

"We're delighted to welcome DALSA as a partner", said Paul Greenfield, CEO of Aspex Semiconductor. "As the leading player in digital cinematography cameras, DALSA's 4K images are amongst the most demanding image processing applications we have seen in terms of quality and throughput, so it is a great match for our leading-edge platforms. With 8 million pixels per frame, and the requirement for full 16-bit dynamic range, our ability to handle tens of thousands of pixels in a single clock cycle leaves even the latest multi-core server farms in the dust, offering significantly reduced cost, space, heat, noise, and power supply requirements."

DALSA and Aspex have entered into a long-term partnership agreement, which includes a limited-term exclusivity period for DALSA in the Digital Cinema market, linked to certain volume commitments.

"As a silicon vendor, we don't usually engage in exclusivity discussions with customers. However, DALSA's market leadership in digital image capture, together with the similar mindset of our two companies, led us to a commercial agreement which makes sense for both sides." said Paul Greenfield, CEO of Aspex Semiconductor. "We anticipate that DALSA will be a multi-million dollar customer over the next few years. The exclusive relationship ensures that we'll focus 100% on enabling DALSA's success, and giving them early access to our latest technology platforms, helping maintain DALSA's competitive edge in this high growth market."
