Teledyne DALSA Secures Earth Observation Contract with Denel Spaceteq

WATERLOO, Ontario –– October 6, 2015 Teledyne DALSA, a Teledyne Technologies company and global leader in image sensor technology, today announced it will partner with Denel Spaceteq, a high performance satellite systems and solutions provider to the local South African, African, and International Aerospace market, to develop a new multi-spectral image sensor for an advanced earth observation application. With Teledyne DALSA’s expertise in multispectral imaging, and Spaceteq’s heritage in Earth Observation Satellites, this multimillion dollar development project is expected to return high resolution images by 2019 when the launch is scheduled.

The Earth Observation application will contribute to the ARMC (African Resource Management Constellation) forged between Algeria, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. The newly obtained images will enable acquisition of data for applications such as agriculture, crop and forestry management, urban planning, environment and disaster monitoring.

“We’re excited to see this project move forward with Teledyne DALSA,” said Patrick Ndhlovu, General Manager of Spaceteq, “Earth Observation Satellites are built by firstly choosing the sensor, then the optics, and then building the rest around that. With their deep understanding of multispectral and hyperspectral imaging, and the challenges associated with these harsh environments, Teledyne DALSA is an obvious choice as our partner for this critical aspect of our product.”

“We are very pleased that Spaceteq has chosen to award Teledyne DALSA this prestigious contract,” said Jean Pierre Luevano, International Sales Manager at Teledyne DALSA. “We are fully confident that our experience with designs optimized for radiation hardness and extreme environments will give Spaceteq and its customer a competitive advantage in today’s earth observation market by providing unprecedented high resolution images at very small ground resolutions.

Teledyne DALSA’s multispectral imaging solutions leverage its long experience in leading edge design, fabrication and packaging technologies to achieve multispectral sensitivity in a single fully miniaturized package. A single device can contain multiple imaging areas tailored to different multispectral bandwidths (wavelengths) in a highly cost effective and reliable package. By placing advanced dichroic filters directly in the imaging area, Teledyne DALSA delivers highly efficient multispectral sensors at various resolutions.

About Denel Spaceteq
Denel Spaceteq is a provider of high performance small and medium size satellites and related systems and solutions to the local South African, African, and International Aerospace market. It was specifically created in answer to the South African Space Policy and Strategy that envisages the growth of the local South African space industry.

The core capability of Spaceteq was established by combining the high technology engineering assets owned by Denel SOC with space assets through the absorption of SunSpace. This created an entity with a space heritage spanning several satellites in orbit, over a time period of more than 20 years. The first of the satellites had its origins in the SUNSAT satellite programme of Stellenbosch University. It was developed completely by a team of South African engineers, and launched in 1999. Most of the team who designed and developed SUNSAT and its derivative satellites still forms the core of Spaceteq today. For more information, please visit www.spaceteq.co.za.
