Electronics Inspection

Electronics inspection applications typically involve Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) at multiple manufacturing stages, from bare printed circuit boards inspection to solder paste inspection to populated board inspection (post-reflow), and Automated X-ray Inspection (AXI). The trend is toward more points of inspection, but the key is always to capture yield-limiting defects (and avoid false positives) while reducing the overall time for inspection.

As components and traces shrink, inspection systems need to provide ever-greater resolution while maintaining or even increasing total system throughput--thus the need for speed. Higher speed requires higher sensitivity to make up for the reduced number of photons. Delivering better images in less time with less light presents conflicting goals, but these are the goals inspection systems must meet.

Teledyne DALSA serves a wide variety of electronic inspection applications with industry-leading line scan and high-sensitivity TDI line scan cameras. Our Piranha2 and Piranha3 cameras provide resolutions from 1 to 12k with the highest line rates in the industry. Our Piranha HS TDI cameras deliver up to 8k resolution at an unprecedented 68 kHz line rate, and with incredible responsivity. The huge advantages in sensitivity provided by TDI (often 100x more sensitive than traditional linescan) allows truly superior speed and image quality without the need for expensive, high-power illumination.

Our Falcon and Genie high-speed area cameras are popular for enabling 2D and 3D inspection of BGA, CSP and flip-chip packages, both in visible light and X-ray designs; they are also frequently used in wire bonding and die bonding equipment.

Downstream, Teledyne DALSA's extensive range of framegrabbers and vision processors harness torrents of data from almost any manufacturer's cameras. Teledyne DALSA's X64 Xcelera framegrabbers deliver leading-edge performance, and its Anaconda vision processor offers real-time image processing to accelerate inspection system decisions.
